Blogging in Brazil
For two weeks in fall 2023, I traveled to five different cities in the states of Mato Grosso and Pará in Brazil to learn more about the impacts of commodity-driven deforestation on communities, economies, and ecosystems. This blog is my record of that time and my thoughts, feelings, and experiences in the field. Views are my own.
Days 9 and 10: Redo
I just wrote a whole blog post that disappeared and I’m too angry about that to try again, so nothing tonight.
Day 7: Snafus
Despite the will of the powers that be and Brazilian air travel, I am finally in Marabá.
Days 5 and 6: Jeopardy Music
Not much to report from yesterday and today, but I wanted to update anyway since I’m not sure what my wifi situation is going to be moving forward.
Day 4: 109 Degrees
Today was a humbling first day in the field — which really amounted to only a few hours of field time, but seems like that was enough for me.
Day 2: Square Peg, Round Hole
Remember how yesterday I was feeling motivated by the complexity of the challenge? Today, not so much.
Day 1: Crash Course
I’ve been through this cycle several times at TNC: I feel totally lost, I gradually gain context, and then eventually I become confident in my new knowledge - only to uncover yet another layer of information that I previously knew nothing about.
